Papers of the interrelated Haven, Appleton, and Cutter families consist mostly of family correspondence, sermons, legal documents, and genealogical material. Haven papers include family letters written primarily by its female members, sermons (1747-95) of Rev. Samuel Haven of the First Church of Portsmouth, N.H., and records of local ecclesiastical councils on which he served. The collection also contains Civil War letters from Gerald Fitzgerald of the 12th Regiment Mass. Volunteer Infantry to Sarah F. Appleton (later Cutter). Additional correspondence includes letters of Charles John Appleton while he was an officer in the Brazilian Navy (1826-31) and correspondence with William Appleton Haven during his travels in the U.S. as an engineer. A few items relate to Elijah Perkins' service in Samuel Johnson's Regiment of the Mass. Militia during the Revolutionary War.
